Post Graduation Work Permit (PGWP)
The Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) is an open work permit designed to enable international graduates from eligible Canadian institutions to gain valuable work experience in Canada. This experience can be instrumental in qualifying for permanent residency through various immigration pathways.
Eligibility Criteria:
To be eligible for a PGWP, applicants must:
-
Graduate from a Designated Learning Institution (DLI): The educational institution must be recognized by the Canadian government.
-
Enroll in an Eligible Program: The program should be at least eight months in duration and lead to a degree, diploma, or certificate.
-
Maintain Full-Time Student Status: Applicants must have studied full-time in Canada during each academic session of the program, with exceptions for the final academic session.
Permit Duration:
The validity of a PGWP depends on the length of the study program:
-
Programs Less Than 8 Months: Not eligible for a PGWP.
-
Programs Between 8 Months and Less Than 2 Years: The PGWP may be issued for a duration equal to the length of the study program.
-
Programs of 2 Years or More: Graduates may receive a PGWP valid for up to 3 years.
-
Master’s Degree Programs: Graduates from master’s programs lasting less than 2 years but at least 8 months may be eligible for a 3-year PGWP.
Important Considerations:

-
One-Time Issuance: A PGWP is issued only once. If you plan to pursue further studies in Canada, consider the timing of your application to maximize the benefit.
-
Validity Tied to Passport Expiry: Ensure your passport is valid for the entire duration of the PGWP you are eligible for; otherwise, the permit may be issued only until the passport's expiry date.
-
Application Deadline: You must apply for the PGWP within 180 days of receiving written confirmation (e.g., transcript or official letter) from your institution indicating that you have met the requirements for completing your program.
